Minneapolis has made history by becoming the first major city in the United States to officially allow the Muslim call to prayer, or adhan, to be broadcast over loudspeakers five times a day, throughout the year.
🌙 The city council voted unanimously to amend noise ordinances that previously blocked pre-dawn and night prayers, marking a major win for religious freedom during the holy month of Ramadan.
🕌 Leaders from mosques including Masjid An-Nur and Dar Al-Hijrah welcomed the decision, along with Christian and Jewish faith leaders who showed solidarity during public hearings.
📢 “The Constitution doesn’t sleep at night,” said Jaylani Hussein of CAIR-Minnesota, praising the move as a fulfillment of America’s promise of religious freedom.
✨ This builds on previous efforts, including a 2020 Ramadan collaboration allowing outdoor calls to prayer and a 2022 policy allowing limited year-round broadcasts. With this new ordinance, Muslims in Minneapolis can now hear the adhan at every prayer time, including dawn and nightfall.
